Riding and Driving - 9 days
If you would like to enjoy the freedom of a self-drive tour but still do some riding, this tour is for you. Overnight is at farms and guesthouses and riding from Hafnarfjörður (Íshestar), Kjóastaðir (Íshestar´s partners), Skagafjörður and Lake Mývatn (Íshestar´s partners). Please note this is only one suggestion of such a tour and we would be happy to tailormake more similar tours in other parts of Iceland.
Day 1. Arrival at Keflavik international airport. Transfer by fly-bus to Reykjavik. Next 2 nights in Reykjavik
For your comfort we recommend taking the fly-bus, which is operated in connection with all flights, straight to your hotel in Reykjavik.
Day 2: Full day Riding tour from Hafnarfjörður
Do you want to test the strength of the Icelandic horse? Are you an experienced rider? We ride on excellent riding paths across stunning lava fields, crossing Kaldá River, around Mt. Helgafell or into Heiðmörk Nature Park. TheViking Tour starts with an introductory ride in the morning. After lunch at the Riding Centre we head out again and try the different gaits of the Icelandic horse. Be prepared to ride trot, tölt or a short canter and really experience the versatility of the Icelandic horse. Viking Tour Express joins the Viking Tour in the afternoon. Choice of route depends on the season and weather
Day 3: Þingvellir – Geysir – Gullfoss. Overnight and riding tour at Kjóastaðir farm
Your car will be delivered to your hotel in the morning. We recommend driving to the famous Golden Circle. First to Þingvellir National Park where all major events in the history of Iceland have taken place at Þingvellir. Today Þingvellir is a National Park. Onwards to Geysir hot spring area where the geyser Strokkur spouts every 5 minutes. Nearby is Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, one of the most beatiful waterfalls in Iceland. Kjóastaðir farm is located between Gullfoss and Geysir. Afternoon riding tour to Haukadalur forest and overnight at the farm.
Day 4: Kjóastaðir – Kjölur highland road – Skagafjörður. Overnight in Skagafjörður, the famous horse county.
We recommend travel through the interior of Iceland, between the glaciers Langjökull and Hofsjökull. We experience the vast desert landscapes and the hot springs of Hveravellir, where you have the opportunity to take a natural hot bathe. Arrival in Skagafjörður county, famous for horse breeding. Overnight at a horse farm.
Day 5: Riding and/or Rafting in Skagafjörður
A riding tour in Skagafjörður in the morning. After lunch you will be heading for a White Water Rafting adventure. This trip leads you through the scenic gorges of the West Glacial river, a stream that can easily be mastered by anyone and gives you the opportunity to experience Iceland from a different perspective. Not included in price! You can also explore Skagafjörður county by car, visiting horse breeders etc. or do a full day riding tour.
Day 6: Skagafjörður – Akureyri – Lake Mývatn (2 nights)
From Skagafjörður via Eyjafjörður with its beautiful town of Akureyri, the capital of the north. Visit Goðafoss, the waterfall of the Gods, before reaching Þingeyjarsýsla where you stay for the next two nights.
Day 7: At Lake Mývatn – driving and riding
Lake Mývatn is considered one of the most fertile areas in the world so close to the Arctic Circle. This unique area features strange lava formations, attractive bays, pseudo craters and thousands of birds. Riding tour in this beautiful area is included.
Day 8: Lake Mývatn – Akureyri – Reykjavik (long drive)
Drive back to Reykjavik on route number one passing Skagafjörður, Húnavatnssýsla and Borgarfjörður. Return the car in Reykjavik.
Day 9: To Keflavik airport
Transfer to airport not included
